MONTEREY, CA – October 15, 2019 – LanguageLine Solutions® has been honored with the American Business Award for Company of the Year, the language-services provider announced. Also known as the Stevie Awards, the ABAs are considered by many to be the United States’ most prestigious business awards.
LanguageLine took home a 2019 Gold Stevie based on the groundbreaking work it has done with public service agencies, including police departments, paramedics, and disaster relief providers. The company was specifically recognized for the widespread adoption of its on-demand mobile interpreting application, which has fundamentally transformed the way first responders interact with limited-English speakers, the Deaf, and Hard of Hearing when in the field. The app has frequently been deployed in dangerous situations, including the aftermath of natural disasters.
Known as InSight, the mobile application provides public service agencies with one-touch access to nearly 11,000 professional LanguageLine interpreters in more than 240 languages. Within seconds, first responders can use their mobile devices to reach LanguageLine interpreters in video or audio-only modes.
ABA judges recognized that use of the LanguageLine mobile application was directly related to making communities safer.
“Our solutions were crucial this past year,” LanguageLine President and CEO Scott W. Klein said. “I’m proud to say that our mobile interpreting solution helped thousands of people who were in frightening circumstances. It brought our world closer by bridging language barriers and cultural divides.
“LanguageLine changed the world nearly four decades ago when we invented over-the-phone interpreting. We have changed it again with on-demand mobile interpreting, which we created with the public’s safety and well-being in mind. It is rewarding to see our vision become a reality.”
First launched in 2016, the LanguageLine application is now being used by dozens of public safety agencies across the country, facilitating thousands of inbound calls per month.
“We’ve seen a massive increase in the adoption of our mobile application among police, firefighters, paramedics, and many other agencies across the country,” Klein said. “This has significantly improved public safety by enabling those on the ground who are providing assistance to instantly reach an interpreter, whenever and wherever one is needed.”
Judges were presented with more than a dozen case studies testifying to the effectiveness of on-demand mobile interpreting. Of the LanguageLine app’s adoption by public safety agencies, Stevies judges wrote, “Instant interpretive services are innovative and important. (We) love that use is on the rise ... This is a great (story) about corporate social responsibility.”
All organizations operating in the U.S. – large and small, public and private, for-profit and non-profit – were eligible to submit Stevie nominations in a wide range of categories. According to the ABA, more than 3,800 nominations were reviewed in the two-month 2019 judging process.
More than 200 professionals worldwide participated in the judging process to select this year’s Stevie Award winners.
“The nominations submitted to the 2019 American Business Awards were outstanding. They illustrate the continued vibrancy of innovation and high level of achievement across the American economic landscape,” said Michael Gallagher, president and founder of the Stevie Awards.
